Planning Your Lombok & Gili Islands Dive Itinerary

The archipelago encompassing Lombok and the Gili Islands presents a diverse underwater topography, from gentle sloping reefs to dramatic walls and submerged pinnacles. Our service is designed to navigate these options, creating an itinerary that aligns with your certification level, interests, and schedule. Our primary dive operation departs from our Senggigi dive center on the Lombok mainland, providing strategic access to the Gili Islands as well as more secluded sites along Lombok’s western coast. The typical journey from our Senggigi pier to the central Gili dive sites aboard our custom-built 15-meter fiberglass dive boats is approximately 25 to 35 minutes. This allows for comfortable two or three-tank dive days without the congestion found on Gili Trawangan itself. For divers staying on the islands, we coordinate direct pickups. Our dive planners can advise on the optimal base for your trip, whether it’s the relative tranquility of Senggigi or the vibrant energy of Gili Trawangan diving culture.

A Curated Selection of Gili Islands Dive Sites

The Gili Matra Marine Nature Recreation Park, a 2,954-hectare protected area established in 1993, is home to over 25 distinct dive sites. Our dive leaders, each with a minimum of 1,000 logged dives in the region, select daily sites based on conditions, tides, and diver experience. Below is a representative sample of locations frequented by our divers. Water temperatures remain consistent year-round, averaging 27-29°C (80-84°F).

Dive Site Location Maximum Depth Key Features & Marine Life Suitability
Shark Point Gili Trawangan (North) 30 meters Sloping reef leading to canyons. High probability of blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, large trevally, and schooling bumphead parrotfish. Advanced Open Water
Turtle Heaven Gili Meno (West) 25 meters Exceptional density of Green (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles. Abundant reef fish and anemone gardens. Open Water Diver
Bounty Wreck Gili Meno (Southwest) 18 meters A 30-meter long sunken concrete platform, now a thriving artificial reef. Home to scorpionfish, stonefish, and schooling glassfish. Open Water Diver
Meno Wall Gili Meno (West) 22 meters Vertical wall dropping from 5 meters. Excellent for macro life, including nudibranchs, crabs, and shrimp. A premier night dive location. Open Water Diver
Halik Reef Gili Trawangan (Northwest) 24 meters Extensive fields of hard and soft corals. Frequent sightings of moray eels, lionfish, and octopus. Strong currents possible. Open Water / Advanced

The Marine Ecology of the Gili Matra Marine Reserve

Beyond the charismatic megafauna like sea turtles and reef sharks, the Gili Islands ecosystem is a complex web of marine biodiversity. The convergence of currents from the Flores Sea and the Lombok Strait creates a nutrient-rich environment that supports extensive coral gardens and a high density of reef fish. Our dive briefings emphasize species identification and responsible interaction with the marine environment. Divers can expect to encounter dense schools of fusiliers, red-toothed triggerfish, and several species of angelfish and butterflyfish. The macro life is equally compelling; our guides are adept at locating cryptic species such as the ornate ghost pipefish, frogfish, and a variety of colorful nudibranchs. While oceanic manta rays (Manta birostris) are not resident to the Gilis, seasonal sightings occur, and we organize specific day trips to southern Lombok dive sites like ‘The Magnet’ where pelagic encounters are more frequent, particularly between June and October.

Equipment, Safety, and Professional Standards

Our commitment to diver safety is uncompromising. Our Lombok scuba diving operation utilizes only high-quality, regularly serviced equipment from leading manufacturers such as Scubapro, Aqualung, and Mares. Our regulators and BCDs undergo annual servicing by certified technicians, and our aluminum tanks (80 cubic feet / 12 liter) are subject to annual visual and 5-year hydrostatic testing. All our dive boats are equipped with DAN-compliant emergency oxygen kits, first aid supplies, and VHF radios. Every dive is led by an active, insured PADI professional. For certified divers, we offer Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx32) to extend no-decompression limits, available for a surcharge of $5 USD per tank. Our status as a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center signifies that we not only meet but exceed PADI’s rigorous standards for safety, training, and professionalism, and we are qualified to train the next generation of PADI Instructors.
